New Creator Micro v2 Update Available fails

I just received a new Creator micro running an older firmware (0.1.5) I believe. It prompts me to upgrade (0.3.0) as soon as I connect it. I am connecting the usb-c cable directly to my mac book air. The update attempts for a while and then I get a “We had an error! Retry!” message. I’ve tried turning it off and on and repeating this process numerous times, to no avail. Please advise.

    Can't update your Creator Micro 2 firmware either? Here's a workaround

    Symptom: Input's Setup tab says "You are on the latest version", but your Creator Micro 2 is actually on a much older firmware. Mine was on v0.1.50, while the current stable release is v0.6.2.

    Why it happens

    Input only checks for firmware updates once, when the device connects. To do that it asks the device for its firmware version. With old firmware, device.status isn't supported, so Input falls back to a legacy version request. That request times out: the device answers after about 20 s, but Input gives up after 10 s.

    As a result, Input never learns the firmware version, skips the update check, and shows "latest version". You can see this in the log (~/Library/Logs/input/main.log on macOS):

    cannot get legacy firmware version: TIMEOUT - Request timed out
fw version is undefined cannot check for updates

    Workaround: flash manually via "Advance flash"

    Input has a hidden manual flashing page. Here's how to use it:

    1. Connect the Creator Micro 2 via USB, ideally directly to your computer rather than through a hub or dock.

    2. Open Input and click the Work Louder logo in the top-left corner 5 times quickly. This opens the developer tools window. Leave it open, because the next button only shows up while it's open.

    3. Go to the Setup tab. In the Danger zone section a new button appears: "Advance flash". Click it.

    4. In section "1. Bootloader", click "Activate Bootloading". The device restarts into bootloader mode.

    5. In section "2. Flash actions", download the latest firmware (Input fetches it from Work Louder's GitHub) and start flashing. Alternatively, download the .bin file yourself from https://github.com/worklouder/cm-v2-fw-releases/releases (use the latest release that is not marked "Pre-release") and choose it via "Upload a firmware file".

    6. Keep the USB cable connected until the device reboots by itself.

    After the reboot, Input should show the new firmware version in the Setup tab.

    Also worth checking

    • Keyboard remapping tools such as Karabiner-Elements or Logi Options+ can grab HID devices exclusively. In my log I saw exclusive access and device already open. Quit them temporarily while updating.

    • Make sure Input itself is up to date (I was on Input 1.0.0, macOS).

    Hope this helps until the version check is fixed in Input!

    I have managed to get it turned on and connected by flashing and reinstalling the firmware. However, now when I try to assign a new keymap, I just get an error.
