Input can flash incompatible firmware onto Codex Micro without warning

Environment:

  • Codex Micro (OpenAI × Work Louder)

  • macOS

  • Work Louder Input 0.17.2

  • Original Codex Micro firmware: v0.4.1

Issue: Input detected my Codex Micro and offered a firmware-related option intended to change or enable device lighting. The recovery screen then displayed five install buttons: Nomad, Knob, KnobF1, Creator Micro V2, and XYZ R2. It did not show Codex Micro firmware and did not warn that these options were incompatible with the connected Codex Micro.

Because the device was already recognized as a ChatGPT/Codex Micro accessory, I reasonably expected Input to prevent installation of firmware for a different model. I selected the middle “Install KnobF1 firmware” option. The flash completed, but after reboot the Codex Micro stopped being detected normally and only two of the three lower indicator LEDs remained lit.

Current state: The hardware is still alive and can enter the ESP32-S3 ROM bootloader. macOS detects it as “Espressif USB JTAG/serial debug unit”, USB VID:PID 303A:1001, on /dev/cu.usbmodem2101. However, neither Input nor ChatGPT detects it as a Codex Micro anymore.

Expected behavior:

  1. Input should identify Codex Micro before offering firmware.

  2. Firmware for other products should be hidden or blocked when Codex Micro is connected.

  3. A clear incompatibility warning and explicit confirmation should be required before cross-device flashing.

  4. Input should provide an official Codex Micro recovery option, or automatically restore the correct firmware after a failed update.

  5. Ideally, the app should validate the firmware’s device identifier before writing it.

Recovery request: Please provide the official Codex Micro recovery firmware (preferably a complete/merged .bin) and the correct flashing address or recovery instructions. The device is already accessible in bootloader mode.

This report is also intended to help prevent other Codex Micro owners from accidentally making their device unusable through the recovery screen.
