Codex Micro disconnects after any button press through a USB hub; direct USB-C works

SUMMARY

When Codex Micro is connected to an Apple Silicon Mac through a USB hub, ChatGPT detects it normally, but pressing any button immediately triggers the lost-communication/reconnecting message. The issue reproduces on every button press. Connecting the same device directly to the Mac over USB-C resolves the problem completely.

ENVIRONMENT

• Device: Codex Micro • Host: Apple Silicon Mac • macOS: 26.5.2 (25F84) • ChatGPT: 26.721.41059, build 5848 • Work Louder Input: 0.17.2, completely closed during reproduction • Input Monitoring: granted to ChatGPT • No Karabiner, Logitech Options+, BetterTouchTool, SteerMouse, USB Overdrive, or Keyboard Maestro running • Failing connection: USB through a generic 4-port USB 2.0 hub, behind another USB hub • Working connection: direct USB-C connection to the Mac

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  1. Connect Codex Micro to the Mac through the USB hub path.

  2. Open ChatGPT and wait for Codex Micro to be detected.

  3. Press any button on Codex Micro.

  4. ChatGPT immediately reports that it lost communication and is reconnecting.

  5. Repeat with another button; the same failure occurs.

  6. Connect Codex Micro directly to the Mac instead. All buttons and Codex functions then work normally.

ACTUAL BEHAVIOR

Any button press through the hub causes the ChatGPT Codex Micro connection to be invalidated, although macOS continues to enumerate the physical device as a USB HID keyboard.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

Codex Micro should remain connected and usable through a normal USB hub, or unsupported hub/topology limitations should be documented clearly.

DIAGNOSTICS

After the ChatGPT connection error, macOS still listed Codex Micro as USB VID:PID 303A:8360. The physical USB device did not disappear, but ChatGPT's application-level HID session closed/reopened. This suggests that the vendor HID/RPC control endpoint is stalling through this hub path while the standard keyboard HID interface remains present.

The direct-connection result makes Input Monitoring and keyboard-remapper conflicts unlikely.

REQUEST

Please investigate Codex Micro vendor HID/RPC compatibility with USB hubs and consider retrying a failed lighting/status RPC before invalidating the entire device connection.
